The Plot: The Caped Crusader (Bale) teams ups with Gotham's Lieutenant Jim Gordon (Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Eckhart) to take on the city's newest villain -- The Joker (Ledger).

Capitalizing on one of the most effective online viral campaigns of all time, it's no wonder theaters are piling on additional screenings (with 3am & 6am showtimes!?) and estimating an opening weekend north of $130,000,000. Nolan's previous Batman gave the familiar franchise a much needed ka-blam by ditching the vivid Technicolor and rubber cod pieces for softer sepia tones and a beefed-up Bale. Now, we've got a new Rachel Dawes (Gyllenhaal), a wicked new Joker (Ledger, in one of his two final roles) and more websites than we can keep track of (Gotham Cable News, Remembering Gina and Why So Serious? to name a few). With apologies to Iron Man, Hancock and The Incredible Hulk (don't want to get him angry), this will likely be the superhero movie event of the summer.

Mamma Mia!

The Plot: In an attempt to suss out her father's identity, a bride-to-be (Seyfried) invites three likely candidates to her wedding, resulting in a wild familial encounter that incorporates the hits of ABBA.

Mamma Mia! / Here we go again / An-o-ther / Musical a-dapta-tion! / Mamma Mia! / Will folks show again? / Why, why? / Maybe Streep can make it happen!

As expected, Amanda Seyfried (can you ask for an awesomer new It Girl?) and company stormed Europe last week, where they dazzled audiences and danced away with a few million dollars. In a femme-friendly year for movies, look for this fairy tale to register on this side of the Atlantic. As deals for Seyfried roll in these next few weeks (we imagine), catch her next in Jennifer's Body, Diablo Cody's Juno follow-up!

Hancock

The Plot: An apathetic, hard-living superhero (Smith) who has fallen out of favor with the public is approached by a public relations professional (Bateman) who has ideas as to how he can repair his client's image.

What we keep thinking about here is the fact that Peter Berg, despite being one of the most versatile people working in Hollywood, has never directed a blockbuster. Until now, right? Right, but only because this is a Will Smith starrer; the man who hasn't had a flop since the year 2000 is one of only a few actors who could have greenlighted this project. (With most any other actor, Hancock would be a January release and, at best, a dicey superhero prospect.) But the question remains: Will Hancock hit the heights of Tony Stark and, to a slightly lesser extent, Bruce Banner? With Smith in anti-hero mode, a hard-fought PG-13 rating, and a definite lack of buzz, we're wondering if this might underwhelm. Maybe that why Sony has all but suppressed the relationship between Will and Charlize's characters here.

Journey to the center of the earth

The Plot: A geologist (Fraser) on a special mission with his son (Hutcherson) discovers the entrance into a previously unseen world.

All of the sudden, Brendan Fraser is the go-to guy for family entertainment, what with Journey 3D, Inkheart (another New Line release, like Journey), and Mummy 3 all due out within a year of one another. But released so close to Mummy 3, another father-and-son-in-peril adventure, even Fraser might have trouble distinguishing his characters from one another. Here's a hint: This is the one that takes a classic tale by Jules Verne and runs it through a computer software suite.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army

The Plot: When the mythical world engages their campaign to take over the Earth, the U.S. government reaches out to the only department staffed to handle the potential catastrophe: The Bureau for Paranormal Research, who once again turns to the demon hero Hellboy (Perelman) and his teammates to stop a merciless dictator from carrying out his plan.

Here's a thought: If 2008 is the year of the superhero, and Universal recently turned the dark-horse candidate Wanted into a hit, then maybe HBII will warrant a third installment, which has been the subject of rumors over the past several weeks. (How Guillermo del Toro would find the time to complete the trilogy, however, is an unsolvable mystery, since The Hobbit two-parter should have him sequestered away until 2012.) Though I am still unsure if the beefed-up crew from the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense will best their 2004 debut, there's no doubt that GdT's creative vision will make for the best-looking comic-book adaptation to date. I just wish Universal didn't feel the need to reveal so much of the movie in its series of trailers, previews, and TV spots; I feel like I watched the entire movie while sitting at the bar last week. I'd rather spend time nerding out at the movie's official production site, a home to all the minute details involved in bringing Mike Mignola's comic-book world (and underworld) to life.

Wall:E

The Plot: A trash-compacting robot learns there's more to life than cleaning up the planet that humans polluted when he falls for a sleek, female droid, then sets out on an intergalactic journey to be with her.

Number Five is alive and animated. According to legend, this film is the last of the leftover projects the Incredibles crew chewed over during an infamous lunch date back in 1994 that spawned several Oscars for Pixar and Disney. Now the 'toon twosome are poised for another box office return that's out of this world (and hopefully still doing lunch together). P.S. Audiences will be treated to the short film Presto before heading out into space.

Space Chimps

The Plot: Ham III (Samberg), the grandson of the first chimp astronaut, is blasted off into space by an opportunity-seeking senator (Tucci). Soon, the fun-loving chimp has to get serious about the mission at hand: Rid a far-away planet of their nefarious leader (Daniels). Fortunately for Ham III, two of his simian peers (Hines and Warburton) are along for the ride.

It's not the premise or the voice cast that bugs me; it's the unimaginative title that gets under my skin and makes me itch. And even though the atmosphere is right for another family film now that Kung Fu Panda's glory has faded, Fox seems to have abandoned this mission with a barely there marketing campaign (which included slapping stickers on a million Dole bananas and partnering with Hardee's, home of the Thickburger)
